Gauge – Don’t Ignore It
Sometimes, you don’t want to take the time to knit a gauge swatch, it’s just kind of a pain to worry about. However, if you’re making a garment or something that really depends on fit and size, don’t ignore gauge, it will be your downfall! The gauge of a stitch is the foundation of a garment’s construction, and if it’s just a little bit off, it can wreak havoc with your knitting. A gauge a bit too small will result in a garment that’s too small, while a gauge just a bit too big could result in an oversized nightmare.
You can adjust your gauge according to your own knitting habits. If you tend to knit loosely, then use a needle one or two sizes smaller than the one called for in the directions. If you knit tightly, you may have to use a needle one or two sizes bigger than the one called for. Experiment with different yarns and needle sizes so you understand the way you knit and how to correct your gauge, and you’ll be a much happier knitter, believe me!
Of course, there are some projects, like afghans, scarves, and such, that don’t rely so much on gauge. Still, if you want to be the best knitter you can be, you’ll pay attention to gauge, no matter what kind of project you’re working on!
