Visit Your LYS
If you’re like me, you tend to do a lot of your shopping for yarn online. Prices can be much better, and you have access to thousands of different types of yarn, instead of a few hundred. However, you’re missing out on something vital if you do all your shopping online, as I recently discovered.
I visited a LYS (local yarn shop) here in Northern Nevada that I’d heard about. Just walking in to see all those wonderful different textures, colors, and bins of yarn was enough to make a grown-up yarn person cry! There is something about being able to touch, caress, and even smell the yarn before you buy, it’s a sensory experience that the Internet just can’t provide. Here’s an example: A picture of this luscious Ritratto yarn from Tahki Stacy Charles just does not do this gem justice. The yarn is soft, with a beautiful drape, and there is a tiny metallic thread running through it that makes it sparkle and shimmer in different lights. Can’t tell that from the picture though, can you?
That’s my point. I never would have invested in this yarn (an it IS an investment at $13.75 retail a skein in my LYS!), because I couldn’t really see all the detail in this exquisite yarn. However, once I spied it at my LYS, I had to have it. Later on, I’ll show you the project I’m creating out of this wonderful yarn.
My point is, sometimes, it’s a good idea to head out to your LYS and just do some browsing. Sure, the prices may be a little higher than you may pay online, but the results, well, the results could be downright stunning!
